Dr Andrew Digby and the Kākāpō Team have been trying for years to breed kākāpō by artificial insemination and this year they have achieved successful artificial insemination for the first time in a decade.
The team undertook 15 attempts with 3 females who produced 5 viable eggs and 2 chicks survived.
This is a huge breakthrough for kākāpō conservation because the father Sinbad is just one of three adults with a rare Fiordland genes. Sinbad is 21 years old and has never breed before this year.
