Meet Our Guest Speaker
Dion Pou, Pest Free Kaipātiki

PFK’s very own Senior Restoration Advisor, Dion Pou will be speaking on the elusive banded rail, or moho pererū and an exciting project happening in Kaipātiki this year thanks to funding from the Kaipātiki Local Board.
The banded rail is a native species with restricted distribution that has been recorded from a number of areas around the Kaipātiki coastline. They are habitat specialists being found in intertidal environments wherever manawa/mangroves and saltmarsh are present. These habitats are themselves linked to wider landscape and climate processes that are particularly relevant for the Kaipātiki area.
The banded rail is a beautiful bird, but uncommon, highly secretive, and rarely seen. Because of this it has a mystique and interest-value that makes it a perfect flagship species to draw attention to the environmental opportunities, and challenges, within Kaipātiki.
This is a project PFK have wanted to embark on for some time and, thanks to the support of the Kaipātiki Local Board, it can finally become a reality this year. The project will survey and better understand the status of banded rail in the Kaipātiki area and follow up with targeted pest control and community engagement based on the findings of that work.
Come along and hear Dion share information both on the ecology of the banded rail alongside the plans for this exciting local ecological project.
